After graduation from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1965, Dr. Jim entered active duty in the U.S. Air Force, serving at March AF Base in Riverside, CA. Following two years of service to his country, Dr. Jim King established a private practice in Santa Barbara, CA where he continues to practice today. Throughout his dental career and up to the present, Dr. Jim King has regularly exceeded continuing education requirements in pursuit of better understanding of the dental system. He has averaged well over 100 hours of Dental C.E. per year (required for licensure is 75 hours per 2-year period), and has accumulated more than 4,500 hours of continuing dental education.
Dr. Jim was appointed a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry in 1976, recognizing his ongoing pursuit of continuing education, and has maintained that credential throughout the 42 years of his practice. Dr. Jim King was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the California Society for Preventive Dentistry, and is a past-president of the American Academy of Gnathologic Orthopedics.
Memberships include the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry (Life Member), the American Dental Association as well as local component societies (Life Member), and is a founding member of the Academy of Bioesthetic Dentistry. He has presented lectures and clinics for Orognathic Bioesthetics International, the California Dental Association scientific session, the American Academy of Gnathologic Orthopedics, and the American Society for Preventive Dentistry. and has articles published in dental journals.
Dr. Jim and his wife Peggy, office manager for the King Dental Group, have three children and eight grandchildren. As for community involvement, Dr. Jim has been involved with various service organizations throughout the years. He has served on Associate Staff in leadership of Young Life, a non-denominational Christian organization for high-school students and worked as Young Life leader at Santa Barbara High School. 22 years ago, he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in the Orthodox Christian church by His Eminence Metropolitan Philip Saliba of New York, and was elevated to the rank of Archpriest in 2001. He has served in regional and national capacities in youth ministry, and he currently serves as a substitute priest throughout the Southwest and other places in the country almost every weekend.
